Classifying AI machines based on what they can do

Classifying AI machines based on what they can do

Dec 29, 2023

John McCarthy defines Artificial Intelligence as “The science and engineering of making intelligent machines”

This machine came into existence due to efforts taken by humans. It is an innovation to help machines to perform tasks unattended. The machine thinks rationally, behaves intelligently, draws insights on past experiences and decides logically to provide solutions.

Artificial intelligence is no longer restricted to academic interests. Modern households and workplaces are discharged from many routine duties due to AI presence. Therefore, it necessitates a need to understand how these machines are classified and have an insight into their functioning.

  1. Reactive Machines:
This functionality of AI triggered the AI revolution. Judgement is based on how it perceives the world and reacts accordingly. Since it responds instantaneously, there is no requirement for reference point from historical data or past experiences. Its capability is not defined for memory related functions, yet it executes its skill like humans to evoke response on different reactions. This narrow concept by limiting its scope to specialised duties helped IBM Deep Blue computer to beat the reigning chess champion GM Garry Kasporov in 1997.
  2. Limited Memory:
This model replicates exactly all the functionalities of ‘Reactive Machines’ except their decision making is influenced by past experiences or data stored in its memory. The operation using the technique of deep learning, resourced through a huge amount of data fed in its memory card. Widely popular in its present juncture. E.g., Thumb Impression reading. Offices use them for giving entry to its employees. From the stored data it recognizes the thumb impression, if it matches the records, it gives them access or denies them entry.
  3. Theory of Mind:
The previous models of Al are used extensively and far reached. This model though conceptualized, the progress is yet to be seen. Research wing of AI laboratories, is yet to imagine a fragment of what human minds do for systems to simulate. Wide range of faculties are put in use by developers, to make machines understand, think and behave like humans. The entitlements for machines are mobilizing resources to recognize, accept and discharge duties from a civil sense, cultural diversities, sentimental values and rational outlook. E.g., Voice assistant helps for communicating with humans at a primary level, but secondary level is yet to reach.
  4. Self-awareness:
A model involves reaching human level awareness. Yet, to find its place in the AI world. This futuristic model is a forewarning for the extinction of the human world, as predicted by late Scientist Stephen Hawking.
  5. With Artificial Intelligence accelerating its pace and creating a demand for its requirement, then firms of all sizes need to adapt to them.
